THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPhY
THE SLR CAMERA
CAMERA OBSCURA
WWW - Our model worked well and as it reflected the outside I could see a clear image on my tracing paper
EBI - But it could have been cleaner, and the image could have been more precise

composition
WWW - I managed to find all 9 of the composition images, and I executed them well with interesting composition and angles.
EBI - Some of them don't match up exactly to the desired picture.

COMPOSITION - rule of thirds
In this lesson we had to take an image with the subject in the centre and the again with the focus on one of the red dots of the image to the right, examples are below.
WWW - I completed the task well and I like the brightness and focus on the image EBI - Could be a bit more accurate to the reference image |

FAST SHUTTER SPEED
Inspiration -
YOWA YOWA
YOWA YOWA
YowaYowa, (1972-) is Japanese photographer. She takes photos of herself jumping using a tripod. Then putting her camera settings on a high shutter speed (1/4000) on the setting TV, and continuous shooting, she captures herself mid-air, looking like she's levitating. This is what we attempted to do.
In the photos below I tried to capture my classmates 'levitating'. I used shutter speed 1/2000 and had continuous shooting on, as well as levels and composition to make my photos more interesting.
WWW - I caught my models in mid-air and it looked like they were levitating
EBI - I didn't like the composition, I thought my images were a bit boring
lighting/angles wise

FAST SHUTTER SPEED #2
In these photos I am much happier with the composition, I changed the ISO and really thought about where I was placing my models. Also I feel that I have accomplished the idea of 'levitating' better as the images are more sharp and precise.
SLOW SHUTTER SPEED

FRANCESCA WOODMAN
FRANCESCA WOODMAN
Francesca Woodman, (1958-1981) - was an American photographer. Taking her first photos as an early teen at boarding school, she progressed her style. Creating images that appeared ghost-like and blurry
Most of her photos are self portraits, not necessarily traditional. She is often nude but half covered by furniture or peeling wallpaper, also blurring her body on slow shutter speed, representing human fragility
WWW- I accomplished the slow shutter speed ghost-like look, I also like how dark and eerie the pictures are
EBI- The photos don't appear very thought through, they seem rough and unrehearsed

SLOW SHUTTER SPEED #2
I am much happier with the second response, the images are more composed and represent the usage of slow shutter better.
APERTURE + depth of feild
Aperture refers to the opening and closing of the lens to let in light.
Lower f/stops give more exposure because they represent the larger apertures, while the higher f/stops give less exposure because they represent smaller apertures. |
Depth of Field refers to how much is in focus in front of and behind the subject that focused upon .
The distance between the camera and the first element that is considered to be acceptably sharp is called DoF near limit. You can affect the depth of field by changing the following factors; aperture, the focal length and the distance from the subject. |
WWW - I managed to represent the depth of field in the images, getting sharper each time
EBI - I could make the image more interesting, I felt it was a bit static and the background was too complicated and new your eyes away from the main focus

APERTURE + DEPTH OF FEILD #2
I liked these images a lot more because they are more engaging to look at, and showed depth of felid more. Also, thy are sharper and have a better focus
PHOTOSHOP
BASICS
step by step
IN THIS LESSON WE LEARNT HOW TO:
Open a doc in photoshop - file > open
Resize a doc in photoshop - image > image size > constrain proportions > document size
Rotate a doc in photoshop - image > image rotation -> edit > transform > rotate -> edit > free transform
Change picture in B/W in. photoshop - image > mode > greyscale
Use the history tool - windows > history -> select how many functions you want to go back
Use the adjustment tool - top bar > layer . adjustment tool
Use a histogram to change the tonal values of the image - window > histogram > change to liking
Use the levels tool - adjustment layer icon at the bottom of layer panel >create layer > change to liking
Change colours in pic during saturation - layer > new adjustment layer > hue/saturation
Change colour in pic using colour balance - layer > new adjustment layer > colour balance

ANDY WARHOL
ANDY WARHOL
Andy Warhol, (1928–1987) was an American artist, film director, and producer who was a leading figure in the visual arts movement, and is best known for his pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, advertising and celebrity culture. We used this as our inspiration for our photoshop work, trying to recreate what he did.

ROMAIN LAURENT
ROMAIN LAURENT
Romain Laurent is a photographer and director from Los Angles. He uses thousands of frames of moving things (but as stock still images) and edits them together to make gifs.
We took inspiration from his work and tried to make our own.
WWW - I made a working GIF and had a good idea using the shadows on the wall
EBI - Its not very smooth, and the composition is slightly boring

GIFS #2
Even thought I like composition better. Personally I don't feel that my second response is better than my first, its choppier and less focused.
LIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
Inspiration -
MICHEL BOSSANKO
MICHEL BOSSANKO
Michael Bossanko is a welsh photographer and has been capturing light since 2004, when he had an accident with a shaky camera and the moon. The camera shake caused the moons light to streak and Michael was curious as to what his camera would do if he moved a strong light infont of the camera, and the rest is history!
Bossanko uses slow shutter speed and long exposure to draw with light to create images in the darkness, leaving the lens open for a long time (30s) to capture all the light in his movements.
WWW - Managed to create the drawing light effect, I like the goast-like effect and how the light sources were picked up on camera
EBI - However, the lines could have been cleaner and the background could have been darker

LIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY #2
WWW - I really like these images, they are clean and precise without being boring to look at. For the middle image I took inspiration from Michel using the moon, and tried it myself, it worked! and i really like how it turned out, almost like a heartbeat
EBI - There are some lights and shadows in the background

LIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY + GIFS
WWW - I like the concept and the switching of colours in between frames
EBI - There is one frame where the background light is different from all the other frames also a frame where one of the lines is broken up a bit andverall o the lines aren't very straight

conclusion
I have really enjoyed this topic, I found it very interesting and helpful to get my bearings of how the camera works and how I can make my photography more interesting and technically advanced. Also I will always come back to this page to check things and remember how I did stuff before so I can do it better now, learning from my mistakes all the time.
As well as learning about all of these incredible photographers that I will take so much inspiration from, how they progressed through their lifetime and showed expression and emotion through their work.
I am really looking forward to the next topic! Exited to learn new things and develop my understanding of photography.
